Bon Bon: Small Bites of Delicious Art

Starting for February 3, over 20 participating galleries and art organizations will host a preview night. You'll find plenty of small, affordable works of original art throughout the Pearl from February 3 to March 4, when district galleries sponsor "Bon Bon: Small Bites of Delicious Art." The purpose of the gallery hop, says Amy Caplan, owner of Caplan Art Design (923 NW 10th; 503.319.6437), "is to get people out and about. If you are an art lover, this is a great opportunity to find great art at affordable prices."
More than 20 Pearl galleries will participate in"Bon Bon," displaying works by Eileen Kane, Eric Leichty, Nigel Conway and others. Many galleries will be serving wine and chocolates, February 13, and all will offer raffle tickets for a chance to win pottery by Kurt Van Vlack and other prizes.

What is First Thursday?
Definition
Art lovers, collectors, artisans, exhibitors and crafts loves can enjoy the art scene on the First Thursday of every month. Pearl District art galleries hold receptions and stay open later into the evening to launch new art shows and exhibits. Non-traditional venues also host public art exhibits such as retail clothiers, flower shops and private practice offices. First Thursday is a celebration of art and artists. In the Pearl District, art can be seen anywhere it is given a stage.
First Thursday gallery opening receptions are generally free and open to the public. Receptions run from about 6 pm until 9 pm (actual gallery hours may vary).
All the Extras
Most galleries have some kind of food and beverage available, and the artists are on hand to talk about their work. Retailers and restaurants also offer great food specials and many artisans also set up on the street to create a fantastic opportunity to learn a little more about art, without being part of a stuffy museum or in an intimidating gallery environment.
Casual by Choice
First Thursday events are popular monthly outings for all kinds of Portlanders. Feel free to dress up but don’t feel like you have to. It’s a casual environment, and most of the galleries are small, informal and inviting. For an even more informal First Thursday experience, be sure to check out the street gallery for independent artists - it’s outdoors, so only runs from April through November, but it’s a great chance to see local artists, crafts people in a non-traditional environment.
How to Get There - Free Service Available
The Pearl District offers Portland’s most outstanding public transportation options which are highly recommended, and free to ride in fareless square. First Thursday is popular so taking Portland Streetcar, Tri-Met, the Max Light Rail, or a pedi-cab is highly recommended – and a great, affordable way to experience great art Thursdays while helping alleviate traffic and parking concerns. Just ride, enjoy and have fun! Plan your trip today.
